An unforgettable week to mark two decades

During CDETNO’s 20th anniversary week, various activities were held, including an immigration discussion, an employment café, and a job market dialogue.

After the special launch show and CV writing workshop on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, CDETNO’s team hosted a bilingual information session for clients and the general public.

In this session, several points were discussed, including the recognition of traditional Déné Territory, the presentation of key moments in CDETNO’s existence by its Director François Afane, and a presentation by a CANAF agent on myths and realities regarding immigrants to Canada.

Four different testimonies were presented, including those of an employer, an entrepreneur couple, a temporary resident, and an immigrant who became a citizen of Canada.

The raffle was drawn at the end of the succulent meal prepared by My African Cuisine.

The second workshop on interview preparation took place on Wednesday. Participants reported feeling more confident in their job search and interview skills.

These workshops also provided them with an opportunity to network with peers and professionals, which can lead to new employment opportunities and professional relationships. Participants attended the employment Café, and one of them is currently in the hiring process.

The 28th Employment Café

CDETNO returned to the Greenstone building on October 16, 2024, to host its job fair.

The fervor surrounding this networking and recruiting event has not diminished. In total, 19 exhibitors responded to the call and offered job opportunities to nearly a hundred job seekers. This event is very relevant in an environment which combines financial attractiveness and a lack of workers with advanced qualifications in certain fields.

According to the results of this evening’s survey, 85% of job seekers rated it as excellent or very good, and 95% said that they could recommend the program to a friend or family member.

Dialogue on the future of the job market

The week continued Thursday with the dialogue on the future of the job market bringing together approximately 18 participants around the table from various sectors including the city of Yellowknife, the Yellowknife Chamber of Commerce, the Chamber of Commerce of NWT, the Yellowknife Chamber of Mines, Det’on Cho, Prosper NWT, NWT Tourism, and facilitator Eilleen Marlowe, who is a Lutselke Dene First Nation member.

An opening prayer was delivered by Ted Tsetta, a Yellowknife Dene, who provided a brief history of the Yellowknife Dene in the area.

The speakers discussed the impact of mine closures on their respective sectors and the ensuing changes in the years to come. Even when they disagreed with a point of view expressed, everyone was enthusiastic about what they had to say.

This was the beginning of a larger dialogue with action plans that will need to be implemented in the future with the participation of diverse perspectives.
