The Supervisor, Child Day Care, is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Child Day Care Facility through carrying out policies and procedures established by the Commission scolaire francophone des Territoires du Nord-Ouest; ensuring adequate care, supervision and a developmentally appropriate program for children, and ensuring a safe environment for children and staff.

SCOPE

The Commission scolaire francophone des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (CSFTNO) is the governing education body for French first-language schools as legislated under the Education Act. The CSFTNO provides schooling for approximately 245 students in two schools. CSFTNO employs approximately 45 administrators, teachers and support staff and has an annual budget of over $5M. In addition, CSFTNO is the governing education body for programs providing Early Childhood Care services for children aged 0 to 4 years and Out-of-school Child Care services to 5 to 11-year-old children as legislated under the Child Day Care Act, the Early Learning and Child Care Standards Regulations and the Early Learning and Child Care Funding Regulations.

The Supervisor, Child Day Care (Supervisor), will be located at the Child Day Care Facility in Yellowknife and will report to the Manager, Childcare Programs. This position is a dedicated professional entrusted with the responsibility of ensuring the day-to-day operation of the child day care facility and the supervision of staff.

Early Childcare Educator and Early Childhood Assistant positions will report directly to the Supervisor, Child Day Care.

 

It is expected that the incumbent will pursue ongoing professional development through appropriate courses, seminars or workshops.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Implement a daily program that meets the goals and objectives of the CSFTNO, and the daily program requirements in the Child Day Care Standards Regulations.
    • Implement activities to meet the CSFTNO’s goals and the cultural, physical, emotional, intellectual and social needs of the children in the program.
  • Develop weekly and monthly schedules of the daily program that ensure variety.
  • Keep parents informed of program expectations, activities and their child’s progress.
  • Ensure the provision of time for nutritious snacks and lunches.
  • Ensure the provision of time for adequate rest, nap or quiet time.
  • Assist children with personal tasks – e.g. diapering, dressing for outdoor play, hand washing.
  • Advise the manager of equipment and maintenance needs.
  • Ensure equipment and the facility is clean, and always safe.
  1. Supervise and develop childcare staff.
  • Assist in the recruitment and hiring of childcare staff.
  • Ensure that all staff are familiar with emergency procedures and equipment.
  • Supervise, coach and encourage staff.
  • Supervise and evaluate staff performance as per CSFTNO Performance Review tools.
  • Navigate, resolve and/or manage staff conflict or performance concerns as required.

  1. Supervise the children attending the facility.
  • Ensure that children are always supervised.
  • Assign staff to ensure required staff to child ratios.
  • Assist as an educator when staff: child ratios are not met.
  1. Establish routines and procedures consistent with the CSFTNO’s policies.
  • Identify and teach positive behaviours expected of children.
  • Adjust expectations to match the development levels of the children.
  • Establish and teach clear routines – e.g. for snacks, outdoor play, rest periods, etc.
  • Correct children using positive discipline.
  1. Communicate regularly with parents and encourage their participation.
  • Keep parents informed of the expectations of the program.
  • Establish regular communication with parents – e.g. newsletter or bulletin board.
  • Identify opportunities for the parents to be involved in the daily program and encourage them to do so.

 

  1. Complete administrative tasks of the facility.
  • Develop and maintain current, accurate and confidential files for all children attending the facility.
  • Develop and maintain current, accurate and confidential files for all staff.
  • Keep accurate attendance records for all children attending the facility and share any concerns with the Manager.
  • Monitor the budget of the facility.
  • In consultation with the Manager, request approval of purchases.
  • Keep receipts for all purchases.
  • Provide receipts and all records of financial transactions to the manager as directed.
  • Ensure required forms are up-to-date and forwarded to the Manager - e.g. Serious Incident Report, Administration of Medicine, etc.
  • Provide required program forms to the Manager in a timely manner.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Demands : In the role of an Early Childhood Educator, the incumbent will experience constant physical movement including bending, stooping, and squatting to lift and carry children as well as sitting on the floor or in child-sized furniture.

Environmental Conditions

In the role of an Early Childhood Educator, the incumbent may be exposed to cleaning products or solutions containing chemicals and to blood and other bodily fluids.

Sensory Demands

In the role of an Early Childhood Educator, the incumbent will be constantly alert to each child in their group and multiple senses will be used to determine the spectrum of wellness and safety risks.

Mental Demands : No unusual demands.

  • Knowledge of and/or the ability to acquire and apply knowledge of child development theories and practices.
  • Knowledge of and/or the ability to acquire and apply knowledge of relevant legislation, policies and procedures to ensure that children are always supervised and safe.
  • Knowledge of and/or the ability to acquire knowledge of child program development, implementation and evaluation.
  • Knowledge of standard office administration protocols, procedures and best practices.
  • Knowledge of confidentiality protocols and the ability to ensure privacy compliance.
  • Interpersonal communication skills; both written and verbal.
  • Skilled at building harmonious relationships and trustful connections with others.
  • Organization and time management skills.
  • Computer skills including Internet and Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to ensure safe and appropriate environment and activities for children.
  • Ability to acquire and apply knowledge of GNWT / CFSTNO policies and processes.
  • Ability to supervisor, coach, mentor and organize work for a team of 5+ staff.
  • Ability to acquire a respectful understanding of the northern cultural environment.
  • Ability to actively seek to understand others by asking questions and reiterating the responses to check understanding before drawing conclusions and/or opinions.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a team member with the ability to encourage staff and ensure they work together as a team.
  • Ability to support others to take personal responsibility to deliver excellent child care.

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:

The completion of High School and three (3) years of childcare experience.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The Completion of the NWT Essentials training is mandatory within 6 months of hire
  • Current First Aid and infant/child CPR certifications
  • Up-to-date immunizations
  • Tuberculosis screening
