Position Description

Position Title:               Tour Guide / Day Camp Coordinator
Position Status:           May be Permanent or Seasonal, Full Time and/or Part Time

Position Summary

Reporting to the Directors, Christine Wenman and Richard McIntosh the Tour Guide / Day Camp Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of Sundog’s tours and day camps.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1.   Tour Guide
    a)   Winter: Duties include working with sled dogs (December to April) including pre-season training and working independently with guests and dogs to deliver a high-quality experience using kicksleds. Other activities include snowshoeing, and other outdoor activities that may be offered to guests.
    b)     Summer: Duties include operating a motor boat and guiding guests on a variety of experiential tours, including narrating the history of the area.
  2. c) Summer: Assisting customers with canoe and kayak rentals based out of Sundog Trading Post.
  3.   Day Camp Leader/Guide
    The employee will be tasked with leading day camps for children 5 – 10 years of age. This includes operating a motor boat to transport day camp participants to an island, assisting with a fishing tour, planning and delivering daily craft, sport, art and cultural activities in order to provide a high quality experience. Related duties include:
    a)   Debriefing with parents/guardians when necessary.
    b)   Communicating with parents / guardians to ensure individual needs of children are met.
    c)   Creating safety plans for activities
    d)   Identifying additional staffing requirements.
    e)   Identifying additional equipment requirements.

In all seasons the employee will work with the company Directors and Manager to develop and enact COVID:
a)     COVID Exposure Control Plan.
b)     Employee Risk Management Plan.
c)     Daily Cleaning Checklist.

Other related duties
i.     In all duties, the employee will be responsible to offer consistent, high quality customer service.
ii.    Within the employees abilities, the employee may be asked to assist with care, maintenance and repair of equipment.
iii.   Dog care: Includes grooming, feeding, replacement of straw in houses, preparation of food, cleaning up after the dogs and watering.
iv.  During times when there are no tours or day camps scheduled, the employee may be asked to assist in the Sundog Trading Post, which may include sales, inventory, rentals and reception services.
v.   In addition to the specific responsibilities listed above, the employee will take initiative in addressing other tasks needed to ensure the delivery of a consistent, safe and high quality product, with the safety of the guests being top priority.

  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Dependable and reliable.
  • Valid Class 5 NWT Drivers License
  • Valid First Aid Certificate, or willingness to obtain certification
  • Potentially successful applicants will be asked to provide a vulnerable person’s criminal record cheque prior to signing a contract.
