PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
The Educator Assistant contributes to the care and education of young children during their formative years. This position is situated within a Child Day Care facility and works in accordance with Government of the Northwest Territories acts, regulations and standards, and Commission scolaire francophone des Territoires du Nord-Ouest policies and procedures.
SCOPE
The Commission scolaire francophone des Territoires du Nord-Ouest (CSFTNO) is the governing education body for French first-language schools as legislated under the Education Act. The CSFTNO provides schooling for approximately 245 students in two schools. CSFTNO employs approximately 45 administrators, teachers and support staff and has an annual budget of over $5 million. In addition, CSFTNO is the governing education body for the Child Day Care Facility providing Early Childhood Care services for children aged 0 to 4 years and Out-of-School Child Care services to 5 to 11-year-old children as legislated under the Child Day Care Act, the Early Learning and Child Care Standards Regulations and the Early Learning and Child Care Funding Regulations.
The Educator Assistant will be located at the Child Day Care Facility in Yellowknife and will report to the Supervisor, Child Day Care (Supervisor).
The Educator Assistant is responsible for helping primary staff (Educator or Supervisor) with the day-to-day operation of the child day care facility by:
- Assisting in the delivery of the daily program
- Supervising children
- Following policies and procedures established by the CSFTNO.
Educator Assistants are constantly alert to each child in their care and concentration and judgment are required when attending and interacting with children or infants.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist in the delivery of the daily program, as requested by a primary staff person.
- Assist with activities on the daily program.
- Supervise children during free play, outdoor play and fieldtrips.
- Assist children with personal tasks – e.g. diapering, dressing for outdoor play, hand washing.
- Advise a primary staff person of equipment and maintenance needs.
- Follow policies and procedures established by the CSFTNO.
- Positive Behaviour Policy and Procedures.
- Parental Involvement Procedures.
- Emergency Evacuation Procedures.
- Routines – e.g. snack time, outdoor play.
- Understand and fulfill the role of a support staff person in the operation of the facility.
- Carry out administrative duties as requested by a primary staff person.
- Wash and sanitize equipment and furnishings.
- Keep information on children and families confidential.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Physical Demands
Educator Assistants are constantly moving throughout their day with varying physical demands including bending, stooping, and squatting to lift and carry children as well as sitting on the floor or in child-sized furniture.
Environmental Conditions
Educator Assistants are constantly in the presence of very young children and may be exposed to cleaning products or solutions containing chemicals and to blood and other bodily fluids.
Sensory Demands : Multiple senses are used to determine the spectrum of wellness and safety risks.
Mental Demands : No unusual demands.

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:
Completion of Grade 10 and experience working with young children.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- The completion of NWT Essentials training is mandatory within 6 months of hire.
